Lung Transplant Program

A lung transplant is a surgical procedure to replace diseased or failing lungs with healthy lungs from a deceased donor. The goals of lung transplantation are to increase length and improve quality of life. Lung transplants are generally appropriate for people who do not respond adequately to optimal medications and treatments including pulmonary rehabilitation. Potential transplant candidates should be otherwise healthy but have chronic, end-stage lung disease. While lung transplantation may be a good treatment option for advanced chronic lung disease, a transplant may not be suitable for everyone.

Research

The lung transplant group explores diverse patient outcomes following lung transplantation. They are collaborating with the PROOF (Prevention of Organ Failure) Centre of Excellence to investigate the use of biomarkers related to the development of chronic lung allograft dysfunction.

The team contributes data to the Canadian Institute for Health Information and to the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation Thoracic Organ Transplant (TTX) Registry.

Care

Lung Transplantation in BC is coordinated by BC Transplant (an agency of the BC Provincial Health Services Authority) in cooperation with Vancouver Coastal Health Authority. Transplant assessments take place at the VGH Solid Organ Transplant Clinic in the Gordon and Leslie Diamond Health Care Centre. Patients receive lung transplant surgery and postoperative care at the Vancouver General Hospital. They continue to receive follow-up care at the Solid Organ Transplant Clinic.
