Neurocritical Care

Our clinical and translational research program helps to improve the outcome of critically ill patients with brain injury.

Research

Our multidisciplinary team encompasses the full spectrum of research including translational medicine, epidemiology, and qualitative methods. We currently have several comprehensive fields of inquiry. Our translational research program is examining the neurophysiology and outcomes of patients with hypoxic-ischemic brain injury from cardiac arrest. In particular, we are examining the neurophysiologic impact of hyperoxia, hypercapnea and red blood cell transfusion on biomarkers of neurological injury. In addition to these acute neurophysiologic and biomarker outcomes, we are endeavouring to assess 6-month neuropsychological and MRI outcomes.

We focus on collaboration and have strong links with colleagues in neurosurgery, neurology, basic neuroscience, neuropsychiatry, neuropsychology, and neuroradiology. We are part of the Canadian Critical Care Trials Group and have international collaborations through the University of Cambridge Neurosciences.

Care

The neurocritical care program at Vancouver General Hospital is a multidisciplinary consultative care model integrated with the intensive care unit. Along with our neurosurgical colleagues, we provide a range of invasive and non-invasive multimodal neuromonitoring for patients with various types of brain injury. The implementation of this program has resulted in improved neurological outcomes for patients with traumatic brain injuries.
